<hi style=afpcap>The development of the jet engine spurned many manufacturers to design fighter and bomber aircraft around this new invention. Amongst these was Curtiss whose A-43 was developed as the XF-87 Nighthawk with one aircraft fundied in 1945 and a second the following year. This was one of the last combat aircraft designed by the Curtiss-Wright Corporation. </hi>
